Happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, disgust and anger. I have to admit, I have seen all these emotions on the faces of nonhuman primates, and some other mammals as well. Can you name another emotion? Or ten more? And do they break down to just this six ( Read more... )

And maybe there are just two: happiness and fear.
Happiness may be the root of all positive emotions,
fear the root of all negative ones?

But disgust is so distinct! Perhaps it is merely a state of being nauseated. Hmmmm. And surprise!! That's not happy or sad. I don't know, I have a hard time letting go of the other four.

Perhaps i should have said Love and Fear. I think disgust is rooted in fear, and hope is rooted in love. Though i might give sadness its own category, some would say that it also is rooted in fear. Why be sad? they say. Don't you know that everything is as it should be, enveloped in love.

Hope, like the blue sky, is the most human emotion we do not see. If there can be fear, then there can be hope.

Hope. What is hope? It does seem distinctive....a state of optimistic wishing. Closely related to happiness/sadness.

I have to think about that. It is quite possible to be hopeless, and if that is true, then your statement makes no sense. On the other hand, I get the deeper gist of what you mean----to be is to be hopeful, at least on some level. To be is to want to keep being. Usually. I have a pretty good view from the depressive state of mind and that's where hope = being falls apart.
