Cool! I'd love to know which fairy tales you were told as a child.

yes, hunchback is shockingly different. they make whatsisface into the clearcut hero, when in the book he just wants to get laid, and in the movie i think they also ignore that the priest (or whatever) is sexually obsessed with the girl. i literally cannot remember any of the characters names, and i just read that book in december.

Growing up, because I had three younger sibs all very close in age, my family did not go to movie theaters. Period*. So when a movie came out, my mom took us to the library and we got the book instead.

I clearly remember "Fern Gully" being different--the book had a dragon character (named "Drags," haha) who literally DIED BECAUSE OF POLLUTION. I remember being mystified that my friends who'd seen the movie didn't know about that.

Hunchback was another biggie. Quasimodo (hunchback) DIES. Gypsy girl (Demi Moore?) = DEAD. Soldier boy, too.

Not that I loved tragedy as a kid. I think I was pissed because the plot differences made it glaringly obvious to my peers that I hadn't seen the movies, which was, like, so uncool.

*Except for "Star Wars: Special Edition" and then Episode 1.
