Obviously, I am thrilled about president-elect Obama. But some heartbreaking results have also come in.

Five states voted on propositions that would ban gay marriage yesterday. Four out of those five states passed the bans. (Failed in CT, huzzah!) One of the states to pass the ban was California, which is particularly emotional for me because I ( Read more... )

I KNOW!! There is state, and now I can't remember which one it was, where gay marriage was legal and then repealed. But couples were married in the window it was legal, so now they are a legal couple in a state with a ban. It makes my head spin!!

IOWA! Iowa is the awkward state with one legally married gay couple, even though there is a ban.

They needed to win in SOMETHING. It is truly disgusting. but in Arkansas, I think the bill was more or less, no single person can adopt, but I guess it's a nicer way of saying gay couples can't adopt. It all just seems pretty vengeful.

Yes, you are right. It could have been a McCain victory AND bans passed in four states.

But it seems an absurd game to me--if you are not straight, you will always legally be single in Arkansas. And as long as you are legally single, you cannot adopt.

It's heartbreaking. I had a long conversation with my mother last night (a republican) about how no matter how you feel about hilary clinton, sarah palin, or barack obama - what this election has shown is a growing maturity and open mind from the american people when it comes to gender and race; but all those good feelings are sort of smashed to pieces when you hear about prop 8. I'm really angry at myself for moving back to NJ from California w/out getting the chance to vote on it. It's so...shameful. Especially in the light of the hope that has just sprung forth. I too am disappointed, specifically in California where the last months that I lived there didn't meet a single person who supported prop 8. I think shameful is the word for it. I don't want the blue parts of America to be so proud about Obama that they don't feel shame about this.

My thoughts exactly! I am so proud of the country for Baracking the vote right now, but the battle has just started! He is inheriting such a huge mess, this country is such a huge mess of fear and intolerance, and I feel too wary to celebrate too long.
