Shivering, Kris pressed his forehead against the glass of the window, trying to calm his breathing down. He couldn’t believe that the cursed day was finally near, that he was running out of time. Soon, the priests would come for him, and then, his whole life would be over. He had three days before the full moon was rising.
Kris had always known he was special. There was a mark on the back of his neck, black and wolf-shaped, and it was the reason why Kris was scared, dreading what the future might bring. According to the old prophecy, a human with the mark of the wolf was the one that would bring peace between the humans and the werewolves. By marrying the King of the werewolves, Kris would end the battles that had been raging for centuries. A union between the species sounded so simple, but to Kris, it sounded like a nightmare.
His twentieth birthday, at the night of the full moon, would be the day he’d be escorted into the King’s castle, regardless if he wanted it or not. He’d have to leave his friends behind. Kris didn’t know who his parents were; he’d been brought up by the shamans. His mother had abandoned him when he’d been only one-day-old, leaving him outside the shamans castle. Whether she’d left him because of the mark, he would never know. The shamans had recognized the mark instantly, realizing how important he was, understanding that he was their savior.
What starts as a shudder becomes a violent tremble, his nails scraping the surface of the glass, and he can’t stop a tear falling down his cheek. He has lived a secluded life, mainly for his own protection, and therefore he has seen only five werewolves in his life. But, he has heard stories, a lot of them. The wolves were monsters, brutal, violent killers that sometimes kept humans as their pets. That’s what they had told him.
Except that there was something even more horrible. The stories about the mating scared the fuck out of him. He has been told that there will be a lot of pain, excruciating agony caused by the knot. Maybe even blood. Trembling roughly, Kris forced himself to stop thinking about it, and sat down on a chair next to him, trying to stop the flow of teardrops.
According to the prophecy, he needed to stay untouched, pure, until the day of the ceremony finally came. In three days time, he’d lose his virginity to a werewolf. Furthermore, he’d be mated to the King for the rest of his life, doing whatever the wolf wanted him to do.
He knew it was for a greater good. His union with the King would bring an end to the brutal bloodshed, saving countless human lives. By sacrificing his own future, Kris would stop the endless war, making the world a safe place again. Yet, he didn’t want to do it, fearing there would be nothing but pain and humiliation ahead.
God, he was so scared. He didn’t know a lot about the King of the werewolves, only that everyone respected and feared him. And he knew his first name. Adam. For sure, Adam was powerful, but it didn’t mean he would be kind, that he wouldn’t tear Kris apart.
Pulse racing, Kris stood up, taking support from the wall when his legs felt unstable, knees almost failing him. He needed time to think, an opportunity to consider everything. He needed to get away from the castle that had become his home, his own refuge.
Panicking, he realized the shamans were probably watching his every move. Yes, they were his friends, his guardians, but they also wanted to see the prophecy being fulfilled. As Kris got close to the door of his room, he heard someone walk in the hallway, a steady sound of steps echoing on the wooden floor. He was right, they were really guarding him. And they wouldn’t let him leave, that’s for sure.
Kris approached the window again, contemplating if he could use it as an escape route without breaking his legs. It would be a long fall, but he decided he could make it.
He knew that there was an old, abandoned hunting cabin near the lake; he just needed to get there. He could spend the last couple of days there, fishing, trying to relax a little. Hopefully, the nature would calm him down and give him strength, a will to fulfill the ancient prophecy.
Kris packed a few things into a large bag, trying to think of what he might need, and threw the bag over his shoulder. Then he slowly opened the window, making sure the creaking sound wouldn’t draw any attention. Climbing onto the windowsill, Kris took a deep breath, bracing himself for the impact. He jumped, hitting the ground easier than he’d thought he would.
Then he was already running, hurrying towards the forest, praying no one had seen him leave. Adrenalin rushing through his veins, his legs trembling, Kris reached the border of the dark forest. Chest heaving, he slowed down, whispering a thank you to a god he didn’t believe in.
Kris wanted to look behind him, to see if anyone had been outside, but he was afraid that if he did, he might change his mind and go straight back. There was so much terror in him, so much tormenting, ice cold fear, he felt like his heart was going to break into tiny pieces inside his chest. He couldn’t stay there and just wait.
With that thought, Kris started running again, rushing towards the lake. He’d been there a couple of times, and the cabin was hardly used anymore, especially during this time of the year.
It was almost dark by the time Kris arrived to the lake. The cabin was dusty, but it had a fireplace and a door that could be locked from the inside. It was all he needed.
Soon, the fire had been lit, warmth spreading into the small room. Kris didn’t feel safe, but he did feel a lot safer now that he was really alone. Luckily, he had taken some food and clean water with him, so he slowly started eating.
It took only a couple of hours before Kris started feeling overly tired, and he took a blanket out of his backpack, wrapping it around himself. He hadn’t slept well in over a week. He hoped with his whole heart that the next day his mind would be clearer, his fear under control.
