I have indeed, and had a mixed response to it. It's dystopic, certainly, but nothing more than that unites it to 1984—but then I read a lot of the genre and so it feels much more wide and varied, to me. ^_^ Anyhow my thoughts on it are here, and major-spoiler free. It's got a great atmosphere and sense of survival, but I was not a fan of the the glitzy and romantic aspects. Mostly, it just made me hunger for Battle Royale.

Are you planning to continue on with the series, do you think?

I actually haven't read 1984 because the idea of it sort of creeps me out. =\ I thought The Hunger Games was safer to read because it's categorized as YA. ;) In terms of similiarities, I'm mostly just comparing the idea of a futuristic society in which the government utilizes totalitarian tactics to keep its citizens in order. But I see that the two books are entirely different.

Thanks for the link to your review. :) Since I haven't gotten too far along in the book (only 100 pages in), I can't decide yet if I'll read the sequel.

Sadly (or at least I think so; as it's a trend it must work for most of the general public) a lot of current YA fantasy/scifi dystopic/apocalyptic fiction is worse—in the creepy, gruesome, and sex/violence filled sense—than its adult counterparts.

1984 is one of the most terrifying books I've ever read (and I absolutely recommend it! it's incredible), but it's terrifying because of its potential to become real (not just a totalitarian regime, but that regime's ability to convince its citizens it's serving their best interest). But psychological and political issues aside, it's pretty gritty but tame in the realms of violence, gore, sex, death, destruction, survival. Hunger Games, like many YA dystopic/apocalyptic books, often reaches that extra inch for a bit more gore, a bit more over the top sex and violence (in this case: more violence than sex ( ... )

I've not read much, if any, in the adult genre for sci-fi/fantasy and the like. I'm big on YA fiction, so that's what I tend to read the most. But, true, it's sad that there seems to be a trend with more violence and creepiness in the genre.

No need to apologize for 'hijacking' my journal. I'm a book geek myself, so I welcome paragraphs of going on and on about books. ;D
