I sobbed for the last ten minutes or so of this episode. I picked up on the family angle only when Tony said he's been thinking about getting a "dog", so I'm glad I'm not alone in reaching that understanding. The second viewing really showed me what they were intending with this episode.

Ziva fully embracing the dog (family), desperate for the unconditional warmth and joy it had to offer. Tony AND Tim terrified, sprinting away from the thought of it, and keeping their distance from it in the bullpen as well.

So much being said without actually saying anything.

And really, that's what we love most about this show, isn't it? Sometimes the case isn't that interesting, or there's plot holes that don't get addressed properly, but there's more work done with relationship and character subtext in the writing of this show than any other TV show or movie. And for me, it feels really rewarding to take it all in.

that first picture at the end literally put my in tears. that episode was so cute and heart filling and funny all at the same time! And i didn't realized Michael directed it, but after seeing the single Mary Poppins joke, im not surprised...

And the touch at the end between Tony and Ziva, so cute! And i actually have a fanfic planned that has to do with K-9 dog... Sadly some of my ideas ended up in this one, however small it is...

i lovedlovedloved this episode! (i might even be thinking of watching it again today)

now i better stop typing before my fingers flare up, i do not want to see them swollen.

and 1 more thing...

"All hale littlesammy!" *Bows to the ground*

I spent the better part of the episode alternating giggles and tears. The family metaphor played out perfectly - thank you for reinforcing the bits I missed first time around.

I loved Gibbs dumping out the base commander's coffee (!) to fill the cup with water for Dex. The look he got for that was priceless.

Those Ziva and Vance's scenes, I didn't expect it. And now I love it fiercely. Along with Tony and McGee running away from Doberman. xD

I was very touched with Ruby character. She is... very strong, for the lack of better word. She needed Dex companion after her husband's death, but she let Dex go because she knew that's the right thing to do. Duty calls, just like she said.

And then at the funeral Gibbs said that Dex isn't serving anymore and gave her the star. She certainly thought that Dex is dead. I was torn, by the way, between believing that Dex is dead, but somehow believed "no, they wouldn't do that, right?"

Then yaaay, Dex is back. And she's crying, this time because she's glad Dex is alive. And I just... T_T

(I think I post this on the wrong place the first time, sorry, it's late here =)) )

Yes to all, nothing to add, nothing to further analyze, because you are right (as usual).

What Wenn said. You touched on all the bits I liked the most too. I hadn't quite thought of the dog as a metaphor for family, but you're right. Dogs, even non-service ones, really do become part of your family, and losing them can be as painful as losing a human family member. I really loved the virtual salute to military service dogs; they really don't get nearly as much recognition as they deserve.
