Fanfiction.net and their latest idiocy

Jun 29, 2012 09:01

There is a very good chance I will be pulling my stories off ff.net sometime during the weekend, as a direct reaction to their new policy of not allowing you to turn off anonymous comments on stories completely, so if you want something, get it while it's still there ( Read more... )

Good morning, Sammy. Good for you! :D To defend you, I only registered on the LJ thingy only to be able to comment your wonderful reviews xD. BTW, I've been mentioning this a while ago, but probably you receive thousands of messages on your account... I would like to enter The Elevator Challenge - kytivafan suggested it and... what the heck! Let's do this! I have the story on my page but I don't know what I have to do exactly... Help me through it, please! Thanks ^_^

I got your message, just didn't find the time to reply yet. (Far from thousands, more like a couple a day, lol.) Just drop a link into a comment here. AND the thing you're offering in case you're not the lucky winner. (That's actually the thing I like best about this - since most of us won't be even remotely close to what happens, we're all gonna have to chip in and make more pretty stuff. We all lose, but the fandom wins! ;) )

Good Morning, Sammy! Thank you for your reply! Here's the link.
Regarding my offering, I'm still deciding between a video or a wallpaper. So... I will try to do videos this summer and if I feel they are cool enough that will be my gift for you guys. If I'm not happy with my work I will go with Nº2, and do a T/Z wallpaper ;)

GEEEZ

Why the hell would they do that?

I think I may pull my stories as well.
That ridiculous.

What is "Archive of Our Own" might I ask, please and thank you.

It feels to me like they are really heading toward shutting down fanfic.net.
And that will be sad.

But this...
Shaking head in puzzlement and general flabbergastry.

Currently I'm asking everyone to send a complaint email. If they receive enough of them, they might reconsider.

I'll make an entry about the AO3 when I find the time. For now, here's a post in which I threw in a bunch of info about the AO3. The only thing that changed is that currently you can't get invite codes because they're trying to work out the performance issues before they allow new users.

In short - they're the best thing that ever happened to fandom, regardless what fandom you're in.

Thanks for the link to your post.
And thanks for the info.

AND I am going to send a complaint email to FFN!

I'm confused. A number of times I've been forced to login on ff.net in order to review. I'm honestly surprised that you can't completely turn off anon comments.

And I apologize. I can't remember if I've commented on your fics before... but I continue to lurk and I dig it. :)

Aww, sweetie, don't apologize, it's quite alright to lurk. I know a lot more people read my stuff than actually comment on it, so you're in good company. ;) But if you ever do want to chat, you're totally welcome. Just so you know. ;)

And yes, you're right, up until a few days ago authors had the option of not allowing anonymous comments on ffn - I've gotten too much crap on other sites, so I always kept that turned off. But now you no longer have the option, and as I see it, this is a violation of my wishes and rights as an author, simply because *they* think I might be losing invaluable comments if I disable anon. *fumes*

I am now on the waiting list for Archive of Our Own.
Should maybe get an invite in December.
hehe

It should be worth it!

It IS worth the wait! I mean, look at what they're doing now, they're trying to work out problems and get the servers stable before they let more users rush the site. Besides, you can post all the stuff there ffn doesn't allow, and you don't have to think twice if your smut is maybe going to be deleted. They have a dedicated group of lawyers actively fighting for the rights of fannish authors, in all regards, be it fiction, graphic art or vidding.

And even if one doesn't care about that at all - fuck, it offers so many more formatting options than ffn! You can even put images in there, and links are no problem at all!

*ahem* Sorry, gonna stop the gushing now. ;)

Truth to tell, it sounds perfect.
Like a paradise for fanfic writers.

I hope they can get me in before December!

I am happy you are standing your ground cos there is nothing more annoying than a nasty anonymous letter (I haven't written fics but I've got one at work). The boss just threw it in the bin. It was 2 years ago. I can't understand why fanfic are allowing this ridiculous policy.
