Never has that user icon been more appropriate... because suddenly my new computer doesn't want to boot anymore. Shows me the Windows boot logo and then... nothing, blackness while it tries to access the harddrive. Also, recovering from my install cd always ends up with it freezing while it checks the harddrive ( Read more... )

Checked various options today. Most likely it's the harddrive who is D.O.A. Now the real question is if the computer guy can salvage the data on it. And of course I can't go there before Tuesday. Grrrrrr.

Oh noes! Hope everything is both fixable and recoverable! That's so infuriating I know girl. Have you tried going into safe mode when it starts to/attempts to boot up? I'm not quite sure what safe mode does, but my boyfriend uses it all the time when he's fixing computers ;) I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

I do know what safety mode does, and it's a blessing - alas, no chance here. Anything that tries to access the harddrive says "Ha! You're out of luck, buddy!"

Have you tried putting the harddrive in your old computer, with the setting on slave? Of course, that only works if it's compatible, but I managed to save some data that way once.

In theory, a good idea. In practice, the new drive is a SATA (they don't even get jumpered anymore) and the old 'puter only can handle IDE. Talked to the computer guy today, he'll try to recover my data. Let's see how that works. *sighs*
