Conclusions O and I came to via texts throughout the ep:
-Tony has his own 'Dead Man Walking' (uh, except Ziva's was so much cooler because there were, uh, TWO people in said pre-relationship. And her guy whose name I can't remember was a much cooler person than Tony's chick, but then maybe I just hate her from 'Jericho.') -Hart is Officially Horrible after trying to strong-arm Abby -The Mexican is hinky (can't remember his name either, sorry) -Nice red herring with the whole 'private security company' story thing (in the same ep with Hart and a Mexican official who got Bell out of the hooskow) -Ziva's awesome -The entire writer's room needs economy bottles of ritalin. And a map to dig themselves out of this jacked-up SNAFU
Some nice Vance moments, and Palmer's awesome as usual, but that's about it. I can't bring myself to 'forget' Mother's Day because I think it's going to play huge down the road (they tend to not drop as many Gibbs things as they do for other characters). But this? I could easily forget this.
Heh, I described it as not quite the train wreck I expected too :-)
Know what you mean about the emotional whiplash, I'd almost forgotten about the one night stand thing by the end. This episode was sad. I felt sad for Tony, sad for Ziva and then wildly irritated everytime Malison showed up. Ugh.
I really loved the few seconds where Ziva comes in as Tony's playing the piano, she looks guttered when he calls her Dana - exhausted and sad and CdP just breaks my heart there with the facial expressions.
I thought Dana looked freakishly similar to Jeanne, especially in the scene when they first met (not in the pictures though).
Tony's sudden obsession would have been easier to handle had we had throwaway lines throughout the season, but I guess this ep wasn't planned that far in advance.
BUT what pisses me off is that TPTP have dangled the carrot of Tiva in front of our noses for at least half a year before they decided to backpedal like mad. I keep remembering lines like "It's no longer a question of 'if', just 'when'". I keep

Thanks for the review. I'm on vacation so haven't been able to see the episode yet. I will next week. I looked at some more non-"obsessed" fan opinions and there seems to be a lot of "where did that come from?"
I really think the writers have reacted strongly to some of the reaction by vocal fans (overreacted, imo). All the Ziva dislike and it feels like now Ziva doesn't actually get anything to do anymore. All she does is react to what other people are doing. I miss seeing Ziva in her own stories.
My best guess? When they want heavy buzz, "Tiva" will be back full force. It gets them coverage and generally, from a business pov, the demographic they most want. For now, I'm not sure the writers have even figured out how all these episodes (from TOC to Jurisdiction to Obsession) go together in terms of "Tiva."

I have the bad feeling that they'll continue with that until no one will miss her when they kick Ziva out. Just my gut, of course, but so far, this season has done nothing to calm down my train wreck paranoia.
It's kinda terrifying. I think we need to start up some big pro-Ziva movement that does not involve TIVA too because quite frankly, I like Ziva and I like Ziva as her own character not just as part of a ship. I'd gladly watch and rewatch episodes with a heavy focus on her. Whenever we've got a long drawn out scene with Tony and someone else? I tend to tune it out and I miss when we got scenes where she actually has a purpose other than the token female character who's just there to 'even it out' and look pretty .

Agreed. I miss the season three and four Ziva so badly, because that gal was seriously kicking ass and looking awesome while doing it. Now, she is like a house-broken version of Kate, minus the sexual hangups. She's tamed, and for no good reason, which is the really sad part.
I've had the same reactions to the writers' treatment of the Tiva storyline. In my case, I had to back off the fandom a couple of months ago because I was so angry at being jerked around. After getting excited that they might actually do something with it after Jet Lag and then reading Michael Weatherly et al going on about how there's nothing going on between them... it just made it clear they are only using it as a stunt. Which is a betrayal of the characters, if nothing else.
I know you still love the show and I know you probably don't want to hear this, but the writing on the show, especially in the latter half of this season, is very, very bad. To the point where the writers are doing major disservice to the wonderful characters this show has. I almost want to say 'had'. It's also a huge insult to the people watching. That's what makes me angry.
I am still watching. Still begging the show to get better. Still begging the writers to pay attention to continuity and character development. But I'm losing hope. And that's sad.

I'm getting there now, because up until that desaster, I was content with them giving me enough leeway to read between the lines and let my own view of their relationship develop "offscreen". But now, they sorta officially said nu-uh, isn't, and that's the thing that pisses me off royally.
and I know you probably don't want to hear this
Sadly, I think pretty much the same way - season seven, with some very few exceptions, sucks dead donkeys. :(
For some weird reason, I keep hoping that they'll get the last few eps right, but my gut tells me this whole season will end in a big desaster that won't make me care in the least. They already killed most of my interest in Gibbs, and from what I heard so far, it's not gonna get better. (There is the fact that the guy who wrote "Truth or Consequences" also wrote the finale, so there is a tiny, tiny shred of hope that it'll be good. Very tiny. *sighs*)
A writer friend of mine has suggested that maybe they had a change in writing staff, or a change in supervising producers or something. I haven't been through imdb to check, though.
I'm still holding out slim hope. I'm angry, but I'm holding out hope. We'll see...
