My two cents... vectorcalc December 10 2012, 01:20:28 UTC
I'm a lurker, in case you're wondering who I am :) I found your thoughts really interesting, especially about Dean standing up for Benny and not for Cas. IDK, I ship Dean/Cas really really hard, but I wasn't really mad. I saw this as character development, actually, because he failed Cas the first time around and he's determined to stand by Benny this time. Also, standing up for Benny and saying that he never let him down makes sense. That's pretty much what he said about Cas in 6.20 - he vouched for Cas despite all evidence pointing otherwise until he got solid proof that Cas was working with Crowley. I think Dean's trust is given with consideration to history - if someone never let him down, then he would trust that person without reservation until proven otherwise. And he did greet Benny with a big knife - a really big one, which means that he was totally ready to decapitate Benny if he needed to ( ... )

Other people have pointed out the comparisons to Dean's overblown defense of Benny to the same with Cas in TMWWBK, so you're right. I babble about it myself in an extension of this review here on tumblr. It's something I, well, didn't miss, but dismissed I guess, because, of course, in TMWWBK it's PAINFUL to watch Dean's faith in Cas, because said faith had been LACKING all season prior and Dean is showing it right at the moment when it will cause the worst backlash when it finds out Cas ISN'T acting as Dean is assuming. So I resented that Benny got this support from Dean really early on in his story like this, so both of them could get together and help each other and... it was everything Dean showed Cas TOO LATE in S06, I just got a gut emotional reaction of sadness. It flavoured most of my reaction.

As to whether it's character development or not - well there's a nice analysis here that postulates Dean might not have grown, so much as he's just making similar mistakes with Benny as he has with Sam and Cas in the past. Namely ( ... )

Nope, this came across perfectly clear :) You're right about Dean putting people on pedestals and having everything end in disappointment, and you're completely right that it's not fair at all, but I find it hard to blame him. I think that deep down he knows that it's wrong, but he doesn't know any other way to show love/trust/faith, and he thinks that if he calls anyone out on his mistake, he'll just start the whole mess earlier. Dean's so pessimistic that he's turned into an optimist. I think part of it originated from his relationship with John. Now I think John did the best he could in balancing raising two young sons and hunting, but I think he seriously screwed Dean up, because he placed Dean on a pedestal to a certain extent and was a god-like figure in Dean's heart, so of course Dean, even now, equates love with putting people on pedestals ( ... )
