Sam pushing past Cas to get to the front seat reminded me a lot of when kids (or college students, whatever) call dibs on sitting in a particular spot. All the other kids still want to sit there and may try to sneak in, so they rush at once to the door, pushing everybody else out of the way. I've seen kids tackle each other just to get a finger on the door handle. "Nope! I touched it first, I get to sit there!" If shotgun was a childhood reward system (which I love) then you can imagine Sam and Dean pulling something similar. Sam's an adult and gotten to ride shotgun since he joined up with Dean in season one but old habits are hard to break. There's nothing malicious about it, but you can bet Sam's not letting Cas steal his seat
( ... )
Awww, now explaining it like that makes it sound kind of sweet. Like they are treating Cas, well, like another brother. Running for the shotgun seat is a game and shouting 'no' and rushing to the door is their way of including him in the game. The idea being that Cas was supposed to try and wrestle with Sam, but of course Cas didn't realise that because how would he know? And in their excitement to re-live their childhood Dean and Sam forgot for a moment that Cas would have no knowledge of said game.
Yes, okay. That works for me. Thanks :)
Hunter hazing though? Huh? If you read about this on my tumblr I certainly didn't use that term because I've never heard it before, what does it mean? I'm intrigued...
