It disappointed Toshiko that Grandfather couldn't tell her what made the snow so cold. She was sure it wasn't ice dragons, like he said. But he redeemed himself by taking off his spectacles and showing her a single snowflake, magnified. It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen, a crystal circle and branches, its symmetry perfect until it melted under her breath.
A pattern spreads before her now, a symmetrical web of cracks where a body before hers has smashed into the cement. At cold dawn, her cell walls are the aluminum-gray of a snow-laden sky.
