Her gran died in autumn. Gwen remembers because she was at her school desk, busy painting a bright golden apple, when the headmistress came in. The woman held her hand as they walked out to Gwen's father waiting in the car. On the drive to the hospital, she saw a tree glowing in the afternoon light, the same bright gold as her apple.
She says she loves autumn now, but entwined with the enjoyment-deep, delicate parts of her still associate it with death.
She asks Jack about his saddest season.
He shrugs. “I kind of lost track after awhile.”
