So when millions of greenish birds flock over Cardiff, species unknown, Gwen barely notices. But when a specimen begins tapping her window in code...
Its leg carries a band with an audio recording. Jack's voice. -Does she like the Corgusian sparrows? They travel on Rift energy, take no time to train.
-And he's coming. Soon. Hang on.
Gwen releases the bird, watches it flit back to a tree enveloped by its friends. A dog barks; the flock lifts as one, backs glinting with sunlight, bellies flashing streaked and pale, thousands of wings thrumming, hope, hope.
