After the brief investigation into the girl's death - after his men were cleared because a king was never found responsible for treading on his possessions - Jack managed to get a private word with a village elder. He could unofficially communicate his sympathy, at least.
The man bowed graciously, but looked troubled.
"The child was... wrong," he whispered. "A Rakshasi, some believed. Before you came, they were planning to steal the child and leave it in the mountains to die. To protect the village."
Jack stared.
"They will not admit it, but some in the village have thanks in their heart."
