Pity. Romana had hoped to grow old in this body. It had presence and, truth be told, great hair. It was beautiful and strong.

But not strong enough, apparently. Traveling with the Doctor, it was perhaps inevitable that she should encounter an infection so remote to time and space that the Time Lord immune system was no longer a match for it. That was part of what regeneration was for, she supposed, though few Time Lords in her memory had ever had to regenerate due to illness. Some of them these days did it simply because they were bored with their current bodies. Romana disapproved of such frivolity.

She was loath to bother the Doctor with her predicament. A quick regeneration, and she'd see how long it took him to notice. Ridiculously, he might put it down to vanity, if he spared a thought for it at all. That was one thing about the Doctor: if you wanted to do something in private, you could be reasonably sure he'd be too distracted to bother you.

She was not sentimental. One wasn't supposed to become too attached to one's regenerations, but... well, perhaps she wasn't entirely free of vanity. She checked herself in the mirror one last time, fluffing her hair and letting her fingers tangle in the curls, so thick and soft. Her scalp tingled at the touch.

It was almost time.
