Sugar follows behind, walking calmly.

He starts at hearing himself so hailed, and turns to her, looking a little frightened; but softens once he sees her. "There's a lass."

"Yes, Papa!" She stops at the edge of the water, looking uncertain. Sugar stays nearby, inconspicuously.

"What are you doing, Papa?"

"I don't know. Your grandmother sent me down."

Have someone, then, equally unsettled, equally wary, eager, too, to escape what he's done and what he's known, if only he could realize that's what he wants.

"Uncle," Melehan says quietly.
