my weekend (and other stuff)

First off, I had an incredible weekend.

On Friday, I went out with my good friend Leslie. We got manicures, then had dinner at a nearby newly-opened Mexican restaurant (that does takeaway and the owner's English is fantastic because he studied in Melbourne), after which we went to Sanlitun to watch the football. I've been reading up on MEXT and basically I'm just scared about the "having to know Japanese" part

I'll grant this is only hearsay from others who've contemplated post-grad studies in Japan, but the general consensus was if you haven't passed JLPT 1-kyuu (highest level), they won't even consider your application :(

Well, from the little digging I did (which was anecdotal stuff as well of course), that doesn't necessarily need to be the case, especially if you're going for a field that isn't anything to do with Japan, per se. Of course, as an arts student interested in both China and Japan, I have a feeling they'd look at me and go "why don't you know Japanese" or, equally as validly, "why didn't you stay in China?"

The point is moot, though; I can't apply from China and going back to Australia for the full course of interview and testing barrage would be a possibly pointless waste of time and money.

I'll just have to 找办法. Find another way to do what I want to.
