...We need to talk.

It was Tim's turn to make dinner--which almost always meant takeout. Tonight was Indian food--which Tim choose almost entirely because the place on the corner made the best kheer he'd ever had in his life. He carried the bags with him up the stairs to the apartment and let himself in ( Read more... )

Cissie looked up from where she sat in the middle of the living room floor, her homework spread out around her. She laughed at him and the bags of take-out. "Hello handsome," she said, grinning back. "Indian tonight?"

"Which is why insulting my poor gargoyle is just needlessly cruel," she pointed out, smiling up at him. "You don't want to be cruel, do you?"

He eyed her, smiling a little. "I suppose not." He glanced around. "Kon should be back soon, huh?"

Cissie glanced at her watch, figuring out how long Kon had been gone. "Yeah, I think he'll be back pretty soon. It is almost dinner, and he's been gone about half an hour."

"Kon wouldn't be late for dinner," Tim said, smiling a little. "Let's start setting out food and plates."

"No, he definitely wouldn't." Cissie nodded, returning the smile, though it faded quickly. "He's not really all right, is he?"

Tim shook his head, sighing a little. "I... don't think so, no. I think he's been avoiding dealing with all of the issues he came here with--just like he's been avoiding the possibility that his stay here is permanent."

Not that Tim could blame him much on that second part. Their first few months here had been an exercise in denial. Especially on his part. It had been Cissie who had insisted that they needed to start really living here, instead of drifting, looking for a way home.

Cissie nodded, grimacing. She remembered those early months all too well, and even when they had settled into the apartment and decided to go on with their lives and start school, things had been miserable. It had taken them a long time to get through that--it was a lot like going through the stages of grief, but for everyone and everything they'd been cut off from. She wasn't looking forward to watching Kon go through that, and she wasn't sure it wouldn't trigger some of those same feelings in them all over again.

"I think you're right," she said, frowning. She focused on the first part of what Tim said. "I wish... I think there's more he's not talking about. That happened before he came here."

"There is," Tim agreed, frowning. It was obvious, in all of the ways he didn't talk about the people he'd left behind at home. "We should probably try to get him to talk about it. I hear that kind of thing helps." He gave Cissie a wry smile. He wasn't exactly the poster child for talking about one's feelings.

Cissie laughed and squeezed his hand, giving him a small smile. She tended to push him to talk a lot more than he probably wanted to, but she did think it helped. Sometimes, anyway. "It might help, yeah. It's probably not a bad idea." She paused, frowning slightly. "Do you think we can get him to talk to us without making it seem like an intervention or something?"

"I'm not sure," Tim admitted. "I think it's going to be dicey however we do it, if it both of us approach him, asking him to tell us about his hidden pain."

Cissie breathed out a laugh. Hidden pain indeed. "I think you're right. Do you think we shouldn't talk to him together?"

He gave her a wry smile. "Do you really think it would help if we approached him separately?"

She made a face at him. "No, I guess not. We should probably just brace ourselves for an unpleasant experience, whenever we do it."

Tim nodded a little. "We could consider easing into it with food," he suggested thoughtfully. "Cake, and favorite dinner. I mean--he'll know something is up, but his stomach will at least be happy with us."

Cissie gave a weak laugh. "I think that's a wise plan. When do you want to do this?"
