As much as I love you, I'll have to disagree with you.
Iroh is definitely comatose. He's in an upcoming episode, The Fury of the Avatar. Although some people have been speculating that it's from season 1, tv.com and wikipedia both confirm that it's in season 2.
I personally figure that Katara is going to come back in the beginning of next episode and pull out her magical healing skillz.
I think Zuko learns more if Iroh does live, and it's way too early for him to join anyways. I mean, just look at what happened when Toph joined.
Iroh can't be comatose. He needs to be attached to a MACHINE in order to be in a coma, otherwise he'd die from not being able to breathe/eat on his own. HE JUST CAN'T.
He may be alive, but just barely. (He's barely dead. XD Princess Bride.) And Katara cures him, I'll more-than-happily post a sign saying LOSER on my face.
Hell, I don't want Iroh dead. But I'm trying to fit reason into this situation.
You could die from 120 volts of electricity, which by the way is the amount of volts a house outlet has. Can you possibly imagine how many volts lightening has?
YOU DIE. No one can possibly survive that. NO ONE. Trust me; I watch Myth Busters. XP
Then again, this is the Avatarverse, and had it been up to Physics, everyone on the show would be dead by now.
Iroh was breathing through the rest of the episode. He's been confirmed to reappear in future episodes that are confirmed to be season 2. He's not dead.
For the purpose of discussion, it might be possible that Iroh being a Firebender somehow allowed him to absorb the lightning or not have it affect him as much as it would affect someone else. He can conduct lightning, apparently, so he may be able to withstand more electricity than a regular person.
Not to intrude, but... I looked over that particular scene a few times, having it on tape (I recorded it because I had to go out shopping at the time >>) and I think, perhaps it was just blue fire, and not lightning. You don't get a good distance shot to tell, but the sound didn't have a lightning crackle to it. And if it was just fire... I think that sort of changes the arguement about how no one could survive a lightning bolt to the heart. Not that I don't agree Iroh probably has to disappear for Zuko to join the team, but I personally would feel it a bit rushed right now, since Toph only just joined.

Maybe not comatose, but he's not dead. He's definitely in the episode after next.
