Menial labour

I have a character who is kind of a mercenery, but more like a hired-hand. He advertises himself as a freelance menial servant. Pretty much anything you can think of he will do as a freelancer. He also has skills as an assassin, but that one's pretty under-wraps ( Read more... )

How about delivering something to a specific location in the city? Not knowing the timeframe and general setting of the world where the story takes place makes guessing a bit more difficult, but - fetching a load of some foodstuffs? Getting firewood/coal for burning in the cooking stove? Delivering some raw materials to workshop uses? Delivering something made by a workshop to its new owner?

Kind of a medieval dark ages sort of technology setting.

I'm not sure I like the delivery route... Though actually helping out in a workshop of some sort might be an idea.

Some sort of food harvesting, maybe?

Hmm... That could work. What sort of food would need to be harvested in the middle of an Egypt-like desert?

Well, I know you can eat certain cacti. I'm not entirely certain about Egypt's crops, though.

Just a further comment to your choice - if this is anywhere in a hot desert area, the painting is not going to occupy your character for the entire day. Simply because it'll be too hot to paint except in the morning, and possibly towards the evening.

If the weather is too hot, and especially when painting in direct sunshine, the paint (which has to be diluted with something to keep it liquid enough) will dry very quickly and hence, painting is not possible.

Been there, done that, last summer... and we're now talking about northern Europe - I can only try to imagine how difficult it would be to find a suitable time-frame to try and paint anything in a much hotter climate!

Just a thought, really. Well, maybe you could work around this little practical problem by adding this other guy to constantly keep working on the paint to maintain it fluid enough.

It might still work if the painting's done in winter. The cooler climate plus the Nile floods that left all kinds of gooey nutritious gunk on the river plains were what made Egypt's reputation as the granary of the Mediterranean.

True. Better hope that it doesn't rain too much, though!
