Beverages in the Emirate of Cordoba

Dec 11, 2020 00:47

Hi everyone! I was researching whether tea was known in the Emirate of Cordoba, a Medieval Islamic kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula, but found info that both tea and coffee came to Europe through Islamic lands much later. What were people drinking back then, though? I'd be grateful if you pointed out where I could read about it.

From some medievalist friends I know that there was a Hibiscus-Rose-Cinnamon tea/tisane thing and that mint tea was common in North Africa up through Moorish Spain but I'm afraid I do not have a citation to hand. I'd suggest looking into medieval cookbooks, especially where they discuss the silk road, North Africa and the like. Historical recreationists are usually pretty good at having sources to hand for this - Nick of The Copper Pot https://www.thecopperpot.co.uk/ attended the same university I did to study Archaeology and may be able to help; if not http://rovingapothecary.co.uk/ may well be able to help with sources; they're the one I learned about the North African Hibiscus & Rose tea from in the first place. They're both good folk, if you explain you're looking for sources for your own research they may well be able to point you in the right direction.
