Not exactly the question you asked, but as far as backstory goes, perhaps your OC rat kami could have been part of the entourage of Daikoku, a deity associated with household wealth and abundant food stores--symbolized by the fact that he laughs off the presence of rats because he can afford to share his rice.

(Warning: the Wikipedia entry on Daikoku includes a reference to a practice called fukunusubi, or "theft of fortune"--a belief that stealing divine figures without being caught would ensure good fortune. This notion seems to be the recent invention of a Wikipedia contributor--which is a shame, because it has obvious applicability to the concept of ninjutsu.)
