I have a character who served in the British Armed forces in the 1970s who is looking, for the first time, at an armed forces issue pistol from the past five years - i.e., an unspecified moment between about 2010 and today (time travel is involved). The Browning is a model that's been around since 1935; it won't have changed much between the 70s and now. The safety and other basic components are pretty much constant because you don't want to be wondering how to get to the safety or reload when you really need to.

What would really strike them as odd would be the Glock. I remember when it first came out; the plasticky look and feel made you think fake or even toy, but the weight was what really dissonant - it was at an odd point in between "too light to be real" and "too heavy to be fake".

Thanks! I'm half tempted to make it a Glock now, just to put some detail in, but in story terms it is simplest if its just familiar and he immediately knows how to handle it.

Thanks! It sounds like it's perfectly reasonable for me to go with the Browning and what would probably strike the character the most about it is how familiar it is, as opposed to things like cars, phones and TVs.

Thanks! As you surmise the fic is long written. I used a Browning and left it fairly generic - the character was surprised by the familiarity, disarmed it and then moved on with the plot.
