I have an interest in the history of measurement. I'm an engineer, and in a very real sense engineering *is* measurement. The science of metrology is fascinating, and there are lots of historically important events tied to measurement. As well as lots of trivia

Also note that people didn't riot over the calendar change because they thought their lives were being shortened, as is sometimes said -- their complaint was that their next rent-day was going to come due sooner.
