I'm plotting a story that begins a few years before Kublai Khan invaded China. The name of the main protagonist isn't important for now, since he's not human and isn't expected to have one and will only be addressed with nicknames for a while; but I do need to at least find a name for some of the people surrounding him

It's more common around Tang and Song Dynasty to name a child with two-character given names, though there are still quite a number of famous people with one character given names (e.g., a lot of the famous poets).
Don't forget these names are probably used only within the family (This is different from the milk name). When a son start going to school, he will be given a school name. And when he leaves school, he will have a courtesy name.
Have you tried reading wikipedia's page on Chinese names yet? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_name) It's a decent explanation.
For your situation, the military was usually looked down upon by the scholars, especially enlisted men. And the officers are usually scholars who's read military books, though fighting prowess is important, I guess. So the two characters you've picked might be too...refined for a veteran or his family?
