Amount of exertion someone could take after shoulder wound

Jan 08, 2016 19:21

So let's say I've got a character in his fifties or sixties, still in good physical condition, who was run through in the shoulder area and then fell a certain distance. He was rescued before he hit anything during the fall, but then he still has to escape the area where this all happened. How much exertion could he reasonably take before his body ( Read more... )

LOL. Thank you so much! It sounds like what I've written will work fine then, and I should probably even add a little more.

I have the novel where Tenel Ka loses her hand if you'd like me to dig it out, she passes out right after though: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Tenel_Ka_Djo#A_severe_accident... )

Thank you so much! It sounds like what I've written will work, and I should probably increase the severity of things, rather than decrease. And it sounds like I was right on how I figured the lightsaber wound would behave.

Adrenaline does amazing things, but not for very long and then he'll go into shock. Shock varies between people but at the absolute most you would have 30 minutes of him moving and behaving normally before losing coherence, wandering off and/or collapsing. More likely 10 minutes.

Thank you! Good thing he has someone there with him.

I do believe you're writing a fix-it fic! PM me when you're done?

Also, have you looked at Wookieepedia?

I am rather a notorious queen of fix-it fics. ;) Sure, I will PM when I've got it all sorted out!

Another commenter provided some links to pages there, and I think I'm all set! Later today I'll work on touching things up.

Thank you!

I'd like a PM too, if you don't mind? :)

Depending on your plan - I'd say it's possible for your character to do some walking, but I'd believe it a lot more if he braces the arm somehow to prevent shoulder movement. This could be something as simple as wrapping a belt around the arm and torso, to strap the arm against the ribs, which is a pretty reasonable "field repair," so to speak. (I have a plan for one of my half-trained Jedi to dislocate a shoulder and treat it by doing essentially this, though I'm writing in the Old Republic.) On the other hand, people can vary pretty substantially in their responses to shock, so if you wanted quick unconsciousness, I'd believe that too, especially if it's triggered by shoulder movement as mentioned in another comment thread. Doubly so if there's any emotional shock going on as well, which will compound the physical effects.

Hope some of that helps - I think you've got a lot of latitude in how you want to play this out, so it's really up to you.

Sure! I just hope it will be a satisfying fix-it.

Thank you! I'm definitely getting some good ideas of how to work with things and make what I've got better.

I've had shoulder surgery involving laser treatment. It also involved violent efforts to wrench bones back into position, and I think it was this that caused the need for morphine. Based on that ( ... )
