Classic complication of a cracked rib is a pneumothorax, which is what happens when air leaks in between your lung and your chest wall, preventing the lung from expanding. Has hte potential to be life-threatening although usually isn't. Can take a while after the injury to manifest. Symptoms would be stabbing chest pain and shortness of breath. If it's severe enough, it could compromise oxygenation, producing cyanosis (blue lips and nail beds.) Sometimes resolves on its own, but is usually treated with a chest tube.
