Quebec French in the 1930s

My story is set in 1930 or 1931. One of my main characters is Quebecois, living in Wisconsin (or at least based out of there at the time of the story; he's a rum runner and moves around a bit). He speaks English around the Americans he has to talk to, but he slips back into French fairly often
