I'm looking for help in deciding where in London my character, a young woman in her mid twenties, would live while she's studying at the LSE. I've looked at their website but that only has details about their own accommodation and I'd prefer her to be in private rented accommodation. My own uni years were spent in a beautiful Welsh seaside town so ( Read more... )

Start here with the London Rents map. Put in any London location - you'll get a map of the whole area anyway. Any of the green areas would be plausible. Places that students studying in central London have lived in my own experience include West Hampstead, East Greenwich, Lambeth (not far from Waterloo), Tooting, and various parts of the East End.

If you let us know what other features you'd like your character to have near home (open space, particular cultural features, kinds of shops, etc) we may be able to give more specific tips.

I know you've looked at the LSE website, but have you checked the bits about helping to find private housing:

I'd suggest starting with the tube map and working outward from the most direct access to the LSE. That probably means along the Central line in the first instance, since it's a relatively quick journey with no changes of train to lots of areas with flats for rent. Shepherd's Bush (to the west of central London) might be a good choice, since it is considered down-market and has a huge transient population, but has good shopping and pretty good transport links to most parts of London.
