They were Reconstructed. I don't think there were any trials; both Grant and Sherman put in the surrender terms that if they went home and behaved peaceably, the soldiers would not be tried for high treason. You had to take an oath and perhaps some other things before you could have your franchise restored, though.

OP here. Thank you! I know that former Confederate soldiers and officials had to take an oath and such (and the higher-ups had to apply to Johnson personally). Do you know if that applied to civilians as well?

It was required of all voters. There was also more for office holders. Googling "reconstruction oath" would probably turn up what you need.
