A lot of your questions about Hellenistic "Syria" have already been answered, but I thought I'd add some stuff in case you do want your character to originate from the region that is more equivalent to modern Iraq. The Greeks (and later the Romans) referred to that area as Mesopotamia (the land between the rivers), and it was home to numerous ethnic groups. In the 70s BCE, the region of Mesopotamia was part of the Parthian Empire. The Parthians fell under the ethnic umbrella of "Persian" and you may find their empire referred to as the "Persian Empire" in books about Roman history. They conquered Mesopotamia (which had previously been under Seleucid rule--the same Greek-descended empire that was running Syria) in the mid-2nd century BCE ( ... )
