I don't know the area, but if "new" refers to the age of the bridge rather than the name of the river it crosses, then in my experience it will be called "the new bridge", at least in general conversation, for the next fifty years.
The name of the river is the New River. The bridge is The New River Gorge Bridge. Although some may refer to it as The Gorge Bridge, it is typically referred to by its full name and not usually shortened. Hope that helps!
