[ANON POST] broken femur

I have a character who broke her femur during a fight with a supernatural being. She had a lot of other injuries, so the broken femur was pretty much the least of the doctors' worries. She's in her early thirties, about five foot five, naturally a bit heavy, but in very good shape. She's a soldier. I want her to be able to walk short distances with ( Read more... )

As other posters have said, femur fractures are serious business. It's not terribly uncommon for victims to develop compartment syndrome, bleed out into their thighs, or have strokes/heart attacks/pulmonary embolisms because a bit of bone marrow gets into the bloodstream and makes its merry way to the brain/heart/lungs. If there is nothing else actively killing the patient (like a collapsed lung or a gushing artery), a femur fracture is pretty much the #1 priority for the doctor ( ... )

A neighbor of mine broke his femur twice when we were kids--the second time in my basement. He's fine now, but the first break didn't heal well, so that it broke the second time very easily. He spent a lot of time in traction then flat on his back in a body cast.

A ball pein hammer hitting her thigh about 6 inches above the knee at exactly mid thigh should cause a nice clean transverse fracture. To give her a limp make sure when setting the bone you put one foot on her crotch and pull her knee BOTH out and twist laterally before releasing tension. This should set the distal femur in lateral rotation with respect to the priximal fragment. If you put her in a pretty pink cast and let it heal like this she will have this adorable turned out balet look to her walk. It won't stop her from getting around or being athletic but it will look cute and be noticible especially if she wears a skirt.
Tried and true method.
