Hi! I really need info on Morisco culture in sixteenth-century and seventeenth-century Spain, seventeenth-century Morocco and the seventeenth-century Republic of Salé

Settings: Morocco and/or Republic of Salé from 1631 to 1653; sugar plantation in 1650s Brazil; India and England ten to twenty years later.

Cut for length. )

I should preface this by saying that I know nothing about Morocco, and had not even heard of the Republic of Salé before this post, but I have studied Medieval Spain a good bit.

One thing that's worth considering, although it's slightly old history, from your characters' point of view, is that it's entirely possible that Character A's grandfather had in fact converted to Christianity (nominally), depending on what part of Spain he was in, and what situations he was facing. One thing that I remember from my studies is that religious identity, at least for some people, was, hm, more fluid in that day and age, and people would often convert based upon where they happened to live or who they were trading with at the time. I don't have time to look for sources for that at 8:30 on Thanksgiving morning. (poke this post if you don't hear from me within a few days)

I do have a few books to recommend to you: Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree, by Tariq Ali, is about Iberian Muslims at about 1492, which is not exactly the timeperiod you want, ( ... )
