The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the City and County of San Francisco is an appointed position. You have to complete medical school (4 yrs), a general pathology residency specializing in Anatomic pathology (4 years), and a year of Forensic Pathology Fellowship. To gain board certification, you have to sit for the American Board of Pathology's examinations in Anatomic and Forensic pathology (one test in each) and pass them. Then you can start applying for jobs. Wherever you get a job you need a medical license in that state.
