If say, a firework exploded, or another bright flash, or some residue got into his eye, it could affect his eyes, but I'm not sure wearing glasses would fix that. I guess if his retinas were permanently damaged...?
I've been told, but I could be wrong, that having vision problems is just one of the many gifts that a blow to the head can give you. I'd certainly believe it if I read it in a story. I don't know if this helps.
An eye injury is fairly unlikely to lead to long- or short-sightedness, I think, but might well lead to photo-sensitivity, which could require him to wear dark glasses; any good, or do they have to have corrective lenses?
How about a blunt injury to the eye? Get smacked hard enough by a tennis ball (or some other object) right in the eye and you could have enough permanent structural damage to require corrective lenses to see well.
OP here - thank you for the answers. I'll research photosensitivity and blunt eye traumas - both sound like excellent starting points for a new search.
