I've been thinking about this for a while and I'm not quite sure! At this time, most pubs (kneiper) were tiny, dingy and on the east side of Oslo (or Kristiania as it was called until 1925). I haven't found the name of one, but you could use the beer hall (ølhall) at Nytorget. This was a popular drinking venue in the 1880s. There were also a lot of restaurants here.

Thanks! That pdf was very helpful, and the photos were useful for the atmosphere of the story too. In the end I settled on 'Gamle Bryggeri' and placed it on Nytorget.

Also, I didn't know Oslo used to be called Kristiania, and I definitely should have known that, so thanks! Very useful to know :-)

I should add that where you go definately depends on what class your character is in and what sort of politics he has. Christiania (with a ch) was heavily divided by class boundaries. For instance a somewhat respectable character might prefer Grand Café (favoured by Ibsen), Bekkevolds skjenkestue (the oldest place in Christiania and favoured by Wergeland), or a certain bohemian haunt whose name I totally forget. For the latter all I remember was that it had an infamous stairway you had to go up, sometimes called the Stairs of Shame.

Ooh, the Grand Café looks nice! If rather expensive... The characters are meeting in disguise, so I can have them disguised as anything I like. I'm going to go with Bekkevolds skjenkestue - it looks like it has the right sort of atmosphere, and it's not far from the waterfront, which is just what I need. Thank you!
