In all the malls I've been to in CT, the anchor stores have been some combination of Macy's, JC Penney, Sears, and occasionally Kohl's. Kohl's probably has the youngest customer base, while Sears probably has the oldest; Penney's and Macy's fall somewhere in between.

Note: I grew up a little bit north of Greenwich county, so this might be a somewhat more middle-class than you're looking for. I don't know a *ton* about the shoreline but I know Clinton Crossing is very popular outlet center down there. In particular it has a Saks Fifth off Fifth, which I would say a stylish younger woman might frequent, and a Jones New York which I would put down as having an older clientele, and a Polo Ralph Lauren for the guys.

Just wanted to say that if by some chance both women ended up in the same store, they'd be unlikely to be attracted to the same clothes. The older woman would probably look at the more conservative outfits in the womens' department, while the younger one would be in the misses or even juniors department. If the younger one is as nouveau riche as you hint, she'd probably be looking for glitz and/or skintight/revealing items, and would get her fashion cues from the Style channel or Cosmo. The older one wouldn't care about trends, she'd have an eye out for classic pieces with a lot of use value.

(I used to be in Apparel Marketing.)

women's versus misses is plus versus non-plus sizes, not older and younger styles necessarily.

If by southern you mean people living in southwest/Fairfield County CT then the only mall that really fits the "snooty" label would be The Westchester in White Plains, NY, and the department stores there would be Neiman Marcus and Nordstroms, with Neiman Marcus being the more elite of the two ( ... )

That is exactly what I meant, yes. Thank you for articulating it so perfectly.

I live in North Carolina and one of my school mates used to buy her school clothes in NYC so I suppose that's what the questioner means.
