Shiny! I haven't seen the episode, but it does break down nicely, and Wikipedia says it's pretty widely used. I think it might still be overkill for the job in question, but I'll put it on the list. Thanks!

You could ask over in http://guns.livejournal.com/. They are really nice and helpful.

You may have already found these, but my significant other (who knows more about guns than I do) provided these two links:

TVtropes page on guns that break down and the rifle Leon gives to Matilda in The Professional.

He also says, "If s/he wants a specifically Russian sniper rifle, s/he could get an SVD Dragunov, but that's pretty long and the barrel can't break down too far."

I think the folks at TV Tropes know more about TV than they do about firearms. (Which is only fair, really.)

The Leon rifle (a modified AR-15) has potential. It certainly breaks down nicely, per that IMFDB pic. And Google indicates it's not a budget-buster. I'm trying to steer away from semi-autos, but it's a possibility. Thanks (and thanks to your SO)!

Yeah, the SVD Dragonov's a fine gun, but just too big for my purposes. (And definitely overkill!)

Yeah, the TVTropes thing takes a lot of sifting, as you say they're more about TV than firearms. Still, one of the categories down there is "Real Life", which has some nifty options. You might especially be interested in the VSS Vintorez, a Russian, suppressed, disassemblable, short-ranged sniper rifle. Unfortunately for your purposes, it's not bolt action, and it's not legal in the US so I don't know if it's compatible with the restrictions your character is facing.

The SV-98 is another Russian sniper rifle, and it's bolt action. I have no idea how far it breaks down though, sorry. :(

Semi-auto aside, I'm liking the looks of the Vintorez. It certainly breaks down nicely (good video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjrWlind57M). As for the rest, my characters aren't operating in the US... and as they'd be the first to say, legal only matters if you get caught. ;-) Thanks!

Try the Internet Movie Firearms Database,

http://www.imfdb.org/

Shows a lot of weapons, what TV show they've been used in, etc.

Is the sniper Matt Helm (the book version, not the crappy films) by any chance?

Did, as specified in the OP.

Is the sniper Matt Helm

No, it's an OC. I haven't even read the Matt Helm books; are they any good?

Depends if you like totally ruthless assassins or not. They've dated a bit, lots of cold-war paranoia.

I have a bit of a soft spot for ruthless assassins, as it happens. I'll add 'em to the to-read list!

In espionage fiction, which this is, the model of gun used is considered extremely important. Omitting it would be like writing a story about professional chefs and saying that they made "some food".
