I'm writing a fic where a British army officer (rank of captain, if that makes a difference) is attending a wedding. I know that there's a certain uniform that he is to wear, but I'm unsure as to what that is ( Read more... )

The current Army dress regs have, weirdly, never been published - so you won't at the moment find anything post-1969. (My other half says that someone has actually posted a request under the Freedom of Information Act to try and force the MoD to publish it!) So at the moment all you can do is search for various individual regiments' dress regs.

However, the correct dress for the occasion you specify is very clear:

No 2 Uniform (that's the smart khaki, not blue or scarlet) worn with a Sam Browne belt. No sword. No medals, just medal ribbons. Regimental cap. (For most infantry regiments this is a peaked cap, but Royal Marines, tankies, paras, Fusiliers etc. wear a beret; Highlanders wear a Glengarry; the Royal Irish wear a caubeen; and so on.) There is some regimental variation in the trousers - e.g. Highland officers wear trews in No 2 uniform ( ... )

And this is why I love this community. Entirely different fandom - but this thread just answered questions about British uniforming at weddings that I didn't even know I had questions about. *grin*

I've been to a wedding where the groom + mates were in their blues - a detail you may be aware of is that they are INCREDIBLY uncomfortable. They are made for standing on parade - sitting, not so much. So they are wonderful for standing bolt upright, in fact they probably brace the wearer in position; but the guys could hardly wait for the wedding to end so they could relax a bit.

oh and I should say, I'm very fuzzy on the details, so i can't remember what regiment anyone was in, or what their rank was, but i remember complimenting my BIL only for him to mutter how he was counting down the minutes till it was over.
