1 & 2. My high school had 6 (4 boys, 2 girls), but we had a dinky high school. It meant the boys could participate in the relays, though. I found high school meet results, so you can see how many people swim for each school as well as how many events they swim in

Ok, so when I was on my high school swimming team we had about thirty or so kids. There is no limit to the amount of people though, because there's different heats. In terms of reasonable events, it depends on a character's strengths. I've been to meets where someone would do a 100 IM (Fly, Back, Breast, Free) and then a 400m event. 50m swims are events that your coach would put you in more as a kid, but as you grew up you'd be in longer events. Now, fly is the most tiring of the strokes, and it takes a certain person to do breaststroke

Also - bulkheads It depends what type of pool your character is swimming in. There's 25M pools and 50M pools (although I think american pools might be different - 25m is one pool length) If it's an Olympic sized pool then it's 50M. Some of the better facilities have 50M pools and the bulkheads are removed. There's also two kinds of dives - the runners dive is the most popular with one foot brace back and the other with toes curling over the edge. The announcement to go is "Swimmers take your mark" and then a beep. On the beep you jump, anytime before and you're a false start (and it's terribly easy to false start if the person beside you false starts - your brain just kinda says "OH THERE THEY GO, GO TOO") The second way is a more beginner type of drive where the swimmers have both their feet at the top of the diving block- toes curling over the edge, and their arms in the diving almost torpedo pose.
Uh, yeah. I could take about speed swimming a lot.
A few things to keep in mind: a) I went to a public high school in the late 90s/early 2000s in NJ. A lot of this hasn't changed in the last 15 years, but is specific to my region. b) I swam in the winter for my high school (the season ran Nov - Feb), and in the summer for a local league. c) I'm a girl
