From what I remember from history classes, almost none of the states had a drinking age. If there was a drinking age it would be set at 18 or 21.

For New Jersey, the earliest I could find for drinking age was 18 in 1962 (and NJ was attempting to get it raised). So, it would probably be safe to assume that prior to Prohibition the "legal" drinking age (at least the age where it would be generally allowed and not frowned upon) was 18.

unless he was teatotle he would have no problem with drinking till the late 70s early 80 drinking age in much of the country was 18 and in many places much earlier than that or none at all.
