There's something quite similar to what you describe near us (nowhere near an "ocean", but I'm assuming that doesn't matter).
Fairfield Hospital, Stotfold, Hitchin, SG5 4AA
Built in 1856 as a mental asylum, converted to private housing in the last few years. A quick Google suggests it's quite well documented and photographed.

I don't know how much it helps, but the 1995 movie "Restoration" featured a small, rural asylum run by people who actually meant well. (it's still quite awful) That movie takes place int he second half of the 17th century, though.
