They look like some kind of succulent, but I have no idea beyond that. I would suggest you try asking the folks at Heronswood Nursery: http://www.heronswood.com/index.cfm

*still in mourning* Maybe Hinkley and Jones will open up a new display garden sometime, when their non-competition clause runs out? We can hope, at least.
In the meantime, I've still got the hellebores I bought back when it was semi-independent to comfort me. u_u
Try Gentiana urnula. There's a botanical tour site here that has a nice lot of pictures of various (and weird!) things, including this little guy. Both images are of the same species, one with furled flower buds, one without. A poke through Google Images should bring up some pics. :)
