I did some research four years ago on gammahydroxybutyrate (GHB, scoop) addiction. You can actually die during withdrawal unless closely supervised medically. Narcotics like heroin and morphine are unpleasant, and medical support is helpful. You can also die during withdrawal, but it's rare.
Some drugs, like meth, are not physically addictive at all, and there is no medical danger during withdrawal, but the psychological addiction is every bit as strong as physical. Both GHB and meth users have relapse rates above 95%.
Don't know much about the topic, but my boyfriend's mother runs a comparable facility (it's a charity, subsidized by government, but it turns a profit from its activities) to the one you are describing. It is a horticultural farm out in the country, a few miles out of the nearest city, where all sorts of people who are on the fringes of society end up and reinvigorate themselves mentally. Most of them are people with severe mental disabilities or disorders like autism or schizophrenia, but some of them are recovering drug addicts. They do farm work at their own pace and are not excessively monitored and generally are very happy to do something meaningful. They are also given the opportunity to get certificates of their ability in a range of things - from "horticultural diplomas" to "small management" and such things. Basically I think that the sort of facility you are talking about is perfectly realistic. Hope this helps :)
That helps a lot, thank you! I did try looking through the tags, but I didn't find specifically what I was looking for. Then again, there are a lot of tags, and the info page says not all posts are tagged yet anyway, so... maybe I was just being lazy, LOL. Anyway, thanks! :)
Hazelden, based out of Minnesota but with branches in various other locations, is a nationally recognized addiction treatment center.
This is their FAQ page about their treatment programs, and there are links for more information. It may not be as specific as you need, but it will give you a lot of good general information. The "Minnesota Model", one of the most common addiction treatment program methodologies, is based on process developed by Hazelden so you might want to try researching that term, too.
This page is a good overview of what cocaine withdrawal is like and talks about treatment. It also links to additional information.
