So, I'm working on a story involving a couple of SOE agents in Gdansk/Danzig, Poland during 1945 and I need to get some access to a contemporary map ( Read more... )

When in 1945? Danzig was pretty heavily damaged through air-bombing and by March of 1945 about 90% of the city were destroyed.

This is a city-map from 1932: http://www.deutschlanddokumente.de/Bilder/krtDanzig1932Herder.jpg

Here's another from 1920: http://www.mapy.blink.pl/pomorze/Plan_der_Stadt_Danzig_1920.jpg

I tried looking for German sites but only found the above ones and the rest were all websites where you could buy maps. Maybe you can contact the city-archive of Danzig? Usually they are pretty helpful and might be able to either answer your question or even make you a copy of an available map if one exists.

Sorry that I can't be of more help.

No need to apologize, the '32 map was extremely helpful!

German search terms might help you get on - "Map" is "Stadtplan", and "historical" is "historisch". Searching for "historischer stadtplan danzig" mainly brought me to stores which sell historic maps or replicas thereof, but I found a blog linking to actual maps.

Danzig 1938

Danzig industrial area 1929

Danzig without year, but the presence of German police stations and the likes and the mere fact that the map is in German would suggest pre-war.

I doubt that you will have much luck finding historical maps such as these from the mid-1940s, as people in that time were busy otherwise, but I hope these earlier ones help.

If you have difficulties with the German terms on the maps, Leo is a good translation help, or you can ask in denglish if you can't figure something out on your own.

You know, I never thought of using German terms - probably should have.

Thanks for the links and the advice!

Again, it might depend on when in 1945 you're looking for, as mentioned above. But since Gdansk was Polish after 1945, it might also help googling in Polish.

Yes! I was just about to post that.

http://www.mapy.eksploracja.pl/viewpage.php?page_id=31 has all these maps (and others, older and newer, German and Polish) in sequence. The first is the whole city, the rest are zoomed-in neighbourhoods (in boxes on the first map). (Srodniescie is a typo for Srodmiescie (i.e. Śródmieście)).
