Historical gun help.

I'm not very gun-savvy, but yet again I find myself writing gun-wielding characters! I can find info on guns and when they were made and so on, but I'm feeling completely uncertain with this story so I have come seeking the wisdom of the internet

I would assume a shotgun, perhaps an over/under or side-by-side given the era and that it would be primarily for hunting rather than home defense. Low-caliber rifles are another possibility. These might be lever-action or bolt-action. Winchester and Remington are two likely brands your family might have.
