The first thing that came to my mind was The Matrix, honestly. Not sure if that's helpful.

1. A guy named Philip Zimbardo did a study on prison where he got a bunch of Stanford students, put them in a fake prison in the basement of his university's psychology building, and watched what they did. The fallout of the experiment was massively damaging, etc., but there was a TV special on it as part of Zimbardo's program, Discovering Psychology.

2. I don't know what your time period is, but The Changeling, which came out last year, dealt with forced imprisonment in a mental facility and the crazy that comes as a result. Other movies: The Shawshank Redemption, Greenfingers, even Patch Adams. Remember to reference movies that involved mental hospitals as well as prisons; there are several movies that involve a sane person wrongfully committed going crazy as a result.

3. Books: Lord of the Flies. Isolation can be a good comparison to prison.
