International air travel costs in 1995

I'm trying to figure out approximately how much it would have cost to fly coach class from Laguardia or JFK to Chennai International airport (MAA) with one or two stopovers in late 1994/early 1995. I've tried searching Google for rates of inflation in air travel, but no luck.

Cheers so much, thrilled this comm exists.

Mmm.

I would go to your local library's microforms room, dig up a newspaper from the rough period you're looking at, and pick out the travel ads. Even then, they were advertising airfare in the travel sections.

You have to do this in person: while online newspaper archives will have 1995-era editions, they won't have the 1995-era ads to go with them.

I didn't make that exact flight in those years, but I'd say the costs of air travel haven't really increased all that much in that time, at least on the flights I've taken. Maybe take 10 or 20% off today's rates?

And there's so much variation in ticket pricing (depending on when you buy, what day of the week you want to fly, if there's a sale, if it's peak season, if you qualify for a discount, etc.) that I think you'd have a lot of leeway. I don't think I'd be called out of a fic to read anything between $1000 and $4000. And if you want more or less than that range, you could probably explain it away with one of the factors I mentioned above.
